April 5, 2020: CONGRESS MUST DEMAND ACTUAL LEADERSHIP!

Up to now, my Pandemic Blog has been about entertaining you, explorations of my psyche, and documenting this strange pandemic world. But now, my dear Bloggelinis, it is time for political action.

Oh, wouldn't it be fine if Hilary Clinton were President right now? She would have been magnificent! She has so much of the military general in her. Let us not forget that it is the Electoral College that gave us Trump. And we can get rid of that horrid relic, yes we can. But that's for later.

NOW when we desperately need a leader, America has been slapped in the face with the ultimate insult: Jared Kushner, who actually said publicly that government stockpiles are not for ... the people of the United States.

The point is, as Rachel Maddow emphatically makes clear in her Rachel-Maddowish way:

ONCE THE GOVERNMENT DELCLARES A NATIONAL EMERGENCY, IT IS LEGALLY OBLIGATED TO ORGANIZE THE RESPONSE TO THAT EMERGENCY!

Maddow uses the example of the Hurricane Katrina catastrophe to help us understand what is happening now. Which is the same goddam thing. The Federal government was unbelievably uncaring and incompetent and many more people than necessary died as a result. HOWEVER EVENTUALLY Bush Jr. fired his good friend Brownie as head of FEMA (Brownie had prepared to run FEMA with a high post in the American Arabian Horse Association -- yes) and put an actual general in charge of the response to Katrina. Yes, too late, yes, very late. But ... BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!

The entire world is facing the catastrophe of the Covid19 pandemic.

But we in the U.S. are facing TWO catastrophes: The virus AND the complete and total failure of leadership by the Federal Government! Congress must intervene and DEMAND that Trump appoint someone to head the entire response who is capable of doing it! Congress has a duty to demand that the President obey the law!

What HAS he done, besides appointing his son-in-law?
He sent out a postcard to everyone.
There is not a single phone number or website listed on the back of this postcard. Nothing.

Trump to Americans: "Go fuck yourselves! I have better things to worry about than the pandemic -- like the STOCK MARKET! Oh, and how I can help the corporations make money out of this thing."

It is time to make POLITICAL ACTION a PRIORITY! Yes, amuse yourself, comfort yourself, protect yourself, feed yourself.
BUT ALSO CONTACT YOUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES TO DEMAND A TRUE LEADER TO ORGANIZE AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL!

Otherwise, we risk becoming a failed state. Can you imagine that? Like Somalia. The difference being, that if we fail we run the risk of bringing down the rest of the world with us.

PLEASE EMAIL AND PHONE YOUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES!
YOUR SENATORS AND CONGRESSPERSON!
AND ALSO AT LEAST ONE OTHER,
THE MOST POWERFUL WOMAN IN THE LAND ---
I'M LOOKING AT YOU, NANCY PELOSI!!!

DEMAND THAT THEY MAKE THE PRESIDENT OBEY THE LAW.
THAT IS THEIR JOB.
IT IS THE PRESIDENT'S JOB TO APPOINT SOMEONE CAPABLE TO ORGANIZE THE RESPONSE TO THE
EPIDEMIC! WE MUST MAKE HIM DO THAT!
Bloggelinis, please help spread this idea.
Forward the email, post it on FB and other places.
We have to do SOMETHING!

April 1, 2020: OK Already: Virginity!

So I've been thinking lately about virginity. I think it's because so much seems to be so terribly wrong with our modern world. And my subconscious was delving around, trying to come up with something that seemed like a REAL IMPROVEMENT over the past, anything that could give me unalloyed joy and satisfaction, some improvement that didn't have its evil side. And my subconscious came up with (drumroll please)....

THE TOTAL DEVALUING OF FEMALE VIRGINITY
IN GREAT SWATHS OF THE WORLD!

Needless to say, male virginity has never been prized. For one thing, there's absolutely no way to TELL if a male has had sex or not. For another thing, the virginity requirement is all about men controlling women's bodies so the men don't accidentally end up spending their time and money bringing up another man's children. Of course men can have sex with whoever they want because, if some other man ends up bringing up the first man's children -- so much the better for the first man!

So for thousands of years, women have been threatened with being outcast, without value, if they had sex before they were married. And of course this situation does still pertain in much of the world. And women did and do suffer terribly under the burden of maintaining their virginity or becoming worthless in the eyes of society.

So this has been going on since Patriarchy began, and that's a few thousand years at least. But it kinda screeched to a halt in lot of the world in the mid-20th century when the birth control pill became available and for the first time ever, heterosexual sex could just be about pleasure.

Wait a minute. I'm realizing that widely available and easy birth control THAT WAS USED BY THE WOMAN doesn't NECESSARILY lead to a devaluing of virginity. But it DID lead to what we called at the time The Sexual Revolution.

Well, I can see this is more complex than I thought. But what my subconscious was muttering is that the devaluing of female virginity has been a tremendous advance for women! My life was so much better because my virginity had no value!

Of course, I might have become a lesbian much sooner if I HAD been pressured to remain a virgin. That would have been much more fun than being straight until I was 30. Hmmmmm....

I had a conversation decades ago with a lesbian who had been in the Navy and stationed in Greece. She was there in the 60s. She had a very very wonderful time there because all young Greek women had to preserve their hymens intact for marriage and therefore could not risk having sex with MEN. But they had no qualms about jumping into bed with this gorgeous butch sailor girl.

ANYHOW, now that I'm writing this I can see that this subject is deep, complex and totally beyond my ability to fully explore. Everywhere I look, little tendrils start growing into other areas.

ACTUALLY, female virginity STILL has some value in the lesbian community. If a woman has never had sex with a man, she can be considered a Gold Star Lesbian. And I think that women ARE proud of only having sex with women. I would be. I haven't encountered many Gold Star dykes.

I did have one girlfriend who had never had sexual intercourse with a man. She told me that at one point, she had kind of a kinky playful relationship with a gay male friend. One play session, he had her tied up and he said he was going to ... well, essentially rape her. He seemed serious. She told him, "If you do, you'd better kill me too. Because as soon as I'm untied, I'm going to kill YOU!"

She definitely would have killed him, in my opinion. I guess he thought so too, because he changed his mind. You could certainly call her a Gold Star Lesbian, but she would have scorned the term. She was a Communist. Actually a Trotskyist and a member of the Spartacist League...

But I digress. Or do I?

ANYHOW...

I'm extremely happy that, by the time I got to college, the sexual revolution was in full swing and virginity was not only a positive thing --- I felt it was TERRIBLE! I was the last girl in my dorm hall to lose her virginity, and I was so ashamed of being backward. I felt like I was carrying my virginity between my legs (which I was) and it weighed forty pounds. I was DISABLED by my virginity! I could hardly walk! And now you will hear a story that, I think, I might be telling for the first time, since Carolyn doesn't remember it, and she's much better at remembering my stories about my life than I am.

THE LOSING OF MY VIRGINITY

We're talking 1964. I started going to Antioch College, which has a job program. Students alternate three months on campus taking classes with three months working what they called a co-op job somewhere in the U.S., throughout the whole year. No summer vacation. After our first quarter on campus, my best friend Bonnie (not her real name but very close to it) and I chose jobs in New York City.

I was a nurse's aide at NYU Hospital. Can't remember what Bonnie's job was. We had a little studio apartment. She slept on the bed, I slept on the couch. I didn't mind. I liked the couch. I was a very naive, privileged girl from Los Angeles encountering the Real World for the first time. Seeing as we wanted to dedicate our spare time to saving that world, we looked for volunteer opportunities. And there it was, right across Central Park: Tutoring underprivileged teenagers and young adults in a community center in East Harlem, every Wednesday evening!

So we trotted over and there they were! Two underprivileged young adults! I was a little disappointed, expecting an entire class. I jumped in to tutoring mode. Truly I have no memory of exactly how or with what book I tutored. I do remember that Bonnie was doing NOTHING! What was her problem? FINALLY I noticed that Bonnie was gesturing madly to me that something was wrong. And the two young men, while seeming VERY eager to learn, were also laughing up their sleeves.

Well. It turned out that the tutoring had been moved to another time. These two "underprivileged young adults" were there for a community meeting which they had organized and were leading. Bob and Solly were important players in the politics of Puerto Rican East Harlem. And they thought Bonnie and I were pretty adorable.

Clearly, Bob was the leader and Solly was the sidekick. Bob picked Bonnie, so I got Solly. He was very good-looking. They both were. And community leaders! How exciting! Bonnie and I forgot all about tutoring the underprivileged. It never crossed our minds again.

Bob and Solly came over to our apartment at some later time, for a kind of double date. We NEVER went out in public with them. It would have been extremely bad for them politically to be seen with two white college girls. (I only understood that later.) They also never invited us over to THEIR houses. Hmmm.... I wonder why not?

At some point, Bonnie requested that I absent myself from our little apartment for the evening, so that Bob could come over and get rid of her virginity. Of course I was willing to acomodate, although envious.
c
And then it was time to return to Antioch College, in the midst of the green cornfields of Ohio. WELL, every girl in our hall who had not had sex their first quarter at Antioch had damn well taken care of having it on their first co-op job!

Except me. That's when my virginity became an overweight... why did I say 40 pounds? It was 500 pounds of desperate virginity I carried between my legs! No wonder I walked bowlegged!!!

Three months of classes in the cornfields finally passed. Bonnie and I couldn't wait to get back to our ,,,, "boyfriends?" I don't think I ever used that word. There wasn't any connection between Solly and me except our mutual desire to be in bed together. I think Bonnie was really in love. THAT was a real relationship.

So the very first night back in New York City, Solly invited me to sleep over, and we had sex and I lost my virginity. There was a lot of blood, a lot of pain. I don't remember any pleasure.

BUT THE DEED WAS DONE!

I could hold my head up when I returned to Antioch. That was the important thing.

Then, the very next morning, Solly's wife walked into the little love nest. Solly, courageous and loving man that he was, immediately threw on his clothes and left. I never saw him or talked to him again.

So Solly's wife and I were left to face each other. She didn't live in that apartment. They were already separated. They had a three-year-old kid, and Gina wanted a divorce that Solly refused to give her. Gina and I talked for a LONG time. I mean, we really hit it off! We just loved each other. We laughed, we told stories. She told me of her little boy's trouble with asthma, which I also have. Of course, she thought Solly was a complete jerk for not mentioning her. Gina and me, we were really on the same page in so many ways. She was a wonderful human being. Gosh, if only I was a man..... Eventually I bid a fond farewell to Gina and went back across Central Park to my couch to contemplate my newly deflowered status.

In retrospect, it seems strange that I saw no message in that experience that I might learn from. It was another 13 years before I slept with a woman. Better late than never, I always say!

Well, my dear Bloggelinis,
was it worth the wait, my Virginity Blog?

March 31, 2020: ROOT CANAL CITY, MASKING UP, TERRY'S TIPS & VIRGINITY

So I have been sheltering in place since March 5, when the Mayor of San Francisco announced that vulnerable people should do that. On March 7, I did a big grocery shopping at Mollie Stone's and got a ride with my groceries up the hill to my house in their van. Since then I have not gone further than I can walk from my house. I haven't been in a car or taxi or Lyft or bus.

But yesterday I took the bus downtown to the endodontist for a root canal. And I was HAPPY to do it. There's nothing like a giant pain in the middle of your face to make risking your life seem like a very reasonable thing to do! And I am so grateful to Dr. Koka and his assistant and his receptionist for being there for me.

Thank you, everyone who is still working out in the world! Thank you for risking your lives every day so that I can have my groceries delivered and ride the bus and have my root canal done. You are all heroes and you should all be PAID WELL for the risk you are taking to keep the world running!!!

Riding the bus was not a problem. So few people, I could easily keep six feet from everyone. Plus I was wearing a mask. This Washington Post article made me decide to do it.

Yes folks, it's..........
TIME TO MASK UP!

Think about it. The Surgeon General said we don't need to wear masks. The surgeon general who was appointed by Trump. At a time when there WERE no masks and the federal government had no intention of altering that situation by commanding the mass production of masks. Simple solution: Just tell people they don't need to wear masks! Mask crisis disappears! Except for all the people treating the virus, of course. In the countries that have done a good job of controlling the pandemic, everyone wears masks when they go out. According to the article, you don't need an N95 or whatever. Two layers of t-shirt material will offer protection. I urge you to consider doing this.

So I was able to take the bus downtown without touching any surface. Except for my Clipper Card, which I immediately wrapped in a kleenex. I got off at Market and Stockton.
It's very different to go to my little shopping street, 24th Street, which is mostly shut down, and to go downtown, to the center of the city, which is almost empty. Eerie.
Yes, there are people walking around. A few. They are almost exclusively those people who have nowhere else to be. And social distancing is not at the top of their list of priorities.
Please notice one of the men is holding a leash that controls another man. We are talking serious "I am my brother's keeper" here.

They were having a good time, the whole city to themselves, laughing, joking.
Another instance of a violation of the legal obligation to social distance! What were the people in this window thinking?!?

Doesn't it seem strange to see people crowded together like that? The other day, on my corner, a young woman shouted from across the street, asking if I had an extra poop bag. Dog owner talk. I shouted back yes and left the bag stuck in a little crack in the telephone pole. It felt like a normal, friendly interaction. NORMAL
Empty Macy's

The glamour and wealth seemed rather obscene to me for the first time.
These are the only two women I saw on the street.

And finally at 450 Sutter: The endodontist! It was freezing inside. They had a fan on, and maybe the air conditioner. It was cold and windy in that office, to reduce the possibility of virus transmission. I kept my coat on. Dr. Koka apologized for the cold. But I was all gratitude. This man was going to stop my pain.
The freezing fan above.

Dr. Koka as seen from below
Below is my friend Mary Wings's drawing to celebrate her successful visit to the dentist. I was so happy when I left -- especially since the novocaine hadn't worn off yet!
Heard an absolutely fabulous street drummer on the way to the bus. Gave him some money, of course. I hurried home, touched all kinds of surfaces. Didn't bother to put the kleenex back on my Clipper Card. By the time I got home, I was totally freaked out by having left my flat to go out into the virusy world. I tore off my clothes, threw them in the hamper, jumped in the shower, scrubbed myself down, and then took a nap. When I woke up, I was in free fall, plunging into despair and fear. Truly, those of us who stay home are so fortunate. It is so much easier for us to feel, and I think to be, safe. Then I got dressed to walk the pups and regained my equilibrium. I thought, "I'm going to take my tea and drink it on Kite Hill!" But then I realized I couldn't, with the mask on. Kite Hill was more crowded, but still doable.
P.S. Does anyone know how long you have to wait before a chocolate cupcake is free of the virus?
I know I said I would talk about virginity today, but truly, this is enough, isn't it? I'm sorry. Tomorrow, that is the FIRST thing I'll write about. Okay?
Thank you, dear Bloggelini, for putting up with me.

March 29, 2020: SUNDAY FUNNY, TERRY'S TIPS, A WALK, VIRGINITY

TERRY'S TIP #1: I know everyone's into tongs, so this isn't REALLY a tip, but I think I have particularly nice tongs. I got them for my play, WAITING FOR THE PODIATRIST, where the climax of the play is a very dramatic scene in the Intensive Care unit where Nurse goes behind a screen to cut the toenails of comatose Dad. (It's kind of a tragic farce -- Mom and Dad are hand puppets.) So there's thrilling music, and Mom and Daughter are on tenterhooks waiting, and the Nurse appears holding one gynormous toenail clipping aloft in triumph. I thought these tongs would be perfect for the moment, but they were too small to read from the stage. Dang. The toenail clipping was just a piece of cardboard, but the IDEA of it inspired a horrified collective "Ewwwww!" from the audience. Talk about suspension of disbelief!!

Anyhow, the tongs have proven very useful of late, whenever I feel terrified of grabbing something like the bag of chard.

TERRY'S TIP #2: As you can see on the far left, I have seven paper bags in a row. Well, you can barely see the last one on the end. But it's there.
They're all labeled with a day of the week, as you can see in the picture on the right. So when the mail comes in, I pick it up with the purple tongs and put it in the Bag of the Day. Then, in a few days, I know it's safe to open all of it. I know the paper bags are pristine, because my last housemate left me with a huge supply of them. It really disturbed me that she never re-used or even recycled them. What was she keeping them all for? And then, she didn't take a single one when she moved out! I guess they were waiting there for the pandemic, just like the purple tongs.

THE WALK: Yesterday was a bit cloudy and cold so I just went to Kite Hill, the nearest open space to my house. The California irises have begun to bloom! Aren't they wonderful? They're native wildflowers that come in so many different colors.
Many many people walking on Kite Hill. Yup. People walking everywhere. So far, I've never been anywhere too crowded, but I know it happens.

I threw the ball for Nikki and Loulou. They love looking for it in the tall grass. Their tails wag furiously while they search. Sadly, they lost this one. The fate of all balls, sooner or later.
Where do all the lost balls go? That's what I want to know! And why do I almost never FIND a ball??? Where is THAT at? When I think of all the balls I've lost on Kite Hill in 43 years, and subtract the few I found, the whole fucking hill should be CARPETED in balls! But it's not!

And what about PENS? Huh? How many PENS have YOU lost? And almost always good ones. And when, every once in a blue moon, you find a pen, it's out of ink and you toss it in disgust. Hopefully in a waste basket, so some other fool doesn't come along and have a moment of joy when she finds the pen, only to plunged into morose depression when she tries to use it. I want to know WHERE THE HELL ARE ALL THE PENS AND BALLS!

Well, I know where they are. The Monkey has them. The Monkey also took my external CD/DVD player. After 2 1/2 years of saying, "I have a DVD player that plugs into my computer.... somewhere in the house," I gave up and ordered a new one online. It arrived and is in the Wednesday bag.

That goddam Monkey is somewhere, lolling on a bed of old tennis balls, writing letters with beautiful fountain pens, and listening to CDs on my player. I know it.
When all hope of finding the ball is gone, I take this magical path to Stanton Street, which is just one block long -- if you can even call it a block -- a kind of an alley, not really paved, between Kite Hill and Upper Market, which is a major thor-oughfare.

Once I met a woman on Kite Hill. She was living on Stanton Street temporarily, because her husband was being treated for cancer at UCSF, over the hill. They had been living on a rubber plantation in Indonesia, and she said the transition to the city was difficult, but not impossible, because she lived on Stanton Street and could spend her days when she wasn't at the hospital on Kite Hill.
And then onward to home.

This big pink house is Barbara's house. When I first moved to the neighborhood, I used to see her on Kite Hill every day with her dog. I just loved Barbara. She was a retired librarian. Very politically left. Did you know that librarians are happier in their work than any other profession? I love walking by Barbara's big pink house and thinking about her. I wish I had invited her over to my house. But it never occurred to me because she was so much older. She could have invited ME over, but old people
usually think that young people aren't interested in them -- which is frequently true. So I should have done the inviting.

And finally at home, in my own garden, which is getting alarm-ingly exuberant.

You know, I'm going to talk about virginity tomorrow. This blog is long enough.

Thank you, dear Bloggelinis, for journeying with me today. Terry
