I was walking in Glen Park. a wonderful neighborhood of steep streets and little houses. It's kinda hidden away and yet has its own BART station. When I worked on Eileen Hansen's campaign for Supervisor long ago, one of her projects was CANVASSING GLEN PARK! Nobody ever canvasses Glen Park because often you have to walk up three flights of stairs to get to the front door of the house to ring the doorbell. It's just too damn STEEP. But Eileen was going to kick the incumbent's butt and canvas Glen Park into the bargain. We Glen Park canvassers were called Eileen's Dream Team. I found that very hokey and embarrassing. When they announced our name, one of the other volunteers started grunting like a chimpanzee and making monkey gestures. I thought, "That's my kind of woman!" and we had a brief fling. Then, 25 years later, on Gay Pride Day, she rang my doorbell. On GAY PRIDE DAY. I was feeling so blue and lonely and felt that this was a sign from the cosmos that we were supposed to have sex, especially since she came supplied with marijuana. It was very nice. Dawn was a special person. She moved to L.A. to help out with a family crisis shortly after our tryst. We've lost contact.
By the way, Eileen Hansen almost won. ALMOST! Her campaign THOUGHT she was going to win, and they got very excited. This is an extremely bad sign, when an insurgent campaign is absolutely sure it's going to win. I myself didn't work as hard as I would have if I had thought they were VERY CLOSE to winning. I'm sure other volunteers also did the same. And Eileen lost by 700 votes. Ouch.
Admittedly, she lost to Mark Leno, a mainstream Democrat at that time. Mark did not like almost losing, so he moved permanently to the left, so he would never be challenged by a progressive candidate again. He BECAME the progressive candidate. That's one way that democracy works. Eileen didn't win but she transformed the incumbent.
I really wish Mark had won for mayor, but I have to confess I am impressed how Mayor Breed has handled the Virus Crisis. On March 5, after the first two cases in San Francisco were announced, she said everyone over 60 or with other risk factors should shelter in place. And so I did. That was pretty damn early.
But I digress. Glen Park. The fence. So there it was. I am a great fan of street art, but the was magnificently over the top, and in a neighborhood that had very little foot traffic.
