Sent Jan.15, 2021: NO NUKES IS GOOD NUKES! or FOOTBALL, FOOTBALL, WHO'S GOT THE NUCLEAR FOOTBALL?

January 15, 2021

No Nukes Is Good Nukes!
or
Football, Football,
Who's Got the Nuclear Football?

NOTE: All the words in blue are quotes from other sources. Sorry, I've lost track of where I read what.

The International Crisis Group, which typically warns about instability abroad, wrote in a memo this week that “the extraordinary powers of the U.S. presidency, from the ability to call up armed forces to quell civil unrest to the unfettered power to launch nuclear weapons, rest with a president who fomented an act of insurrection against the legislative branch of his own government.”

When did YOU start worrying about Trump using the nuclear option? I started ... oh, about the time I realized he had won the presidency on Election Night in 2016.

I think a lot of people felt the same. I rarely spoke about it. It seemed so farfetched. But now here we are with FOUR DAYS TO GO, and many are more than a tad concerned our enraged and unstable President might go on a bombing binge in the short time he has left to do such a thing.

Nancy Pelosi, deeply concerned about that possibility, talked with Mark Milley, the chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to ask what could be done to prevent Trump pushing The Button. Milley said that the Constitution requires that an order from the President to the armed forces must be obeyed. In other words, if the President chooses to incinerate the world, so be it.

I must confess that I did not find that at all comforting. But Milley is not in the chain of command. He is the chief MILITARY ADVISOR to the President, but he would not be involved in carrying out that order. That made me feel a little more hopeful. Then I wondered, who IS in the chain of command?

U.S. Strategic Command chief Adm. Charles Richard is in the chain of command. He said on January 5 he agrees with the American system that allows civilian control of the military, when asked if he would follow a Trump order to strike Iran in his final days.

“I get asked this question a lot,” he said on a Zoom media call hosted by the Defense Writer’s Group. “Bottom line, look, I will follow any legal order that I am given. I will not follow any illegal orders,” he said.

Certainly, I am glad many are asking Richard question. But how does he decide if an order is legal or illegal? He didn't say. That was on January 5. He might be thinking more seriously about this issue since January 6.

Then I read:
In the final days of Nixon’s presidency when he was drinking heavily, then-Defense Secretary James Schlesinger ordered military commanders to check with him or Secretary of State Henry Kissinger before executing a nuclear launch order, Schlesinger revealed years after the fact.

I was so relieved to know that, in a similar very extreme situation, the Secretary of Defense was ready to step in to prevent a catastrophe.

Representatives Lieu, Carbajal and Panetta also liked this idea and wrote a letter to Acting Secretary of Defense Christopher Miller, asking him to intervene in a similar way if necessary, in case Trump decides life isn't worth living and he'd like to take Iran or NewYork City or Georgia with him. Thank you, Congressmen, for taking the time to write that letter! So very few write actual letters nowadays.

This is the last paragraph of their letter to Miller:
"In the coming days, as Trump’s options for remaining in the White House all but disappear, there is a real danger that the President could turn to military action at home or abroad. We are well aware that in ordinary times, your role is to execute the President’s orders. Unfortunately, we do not live in ordinary times. We believe that critical moments, like that we face today, require us to think of every possible avenue to avert disaster. We therefore ask you to implement additional measures to ensure adequate checks are placed on the President’s nuclear authority at the earliest possible opportunity."

But then, it's doubtful if Miller WOULD intervene as Schlesinger did. In fact, Trump seems to have chosen him precisely BECAUSE he's inexperienced and presumably malleable!

AND when I explored this subject further on the websites of anti-nuclear organizations, like Global Zero and Ploughshares Fund, I learned that Schlesinger might have wanted to have power over Nixon but he had absolutely no authority. Presidents have sole authority to order a nuclear strike. They don't need the agreement or support of anyone else. Military commanders can -- they are even supposed to -- disobey "illegal" orders, but then we come back to the question of what is legal and who decides that!

“There are no checks or balances, no way for Congress or any government official to intervene, and the presumption of legality for such an order is overwhelming,” Derek Johnson, CEO of Global Zero, said in a statement after the Capitol riots.

How did we get to this absurd point
where one man can destroy the world
and no one can lift a finger to stop him?

I found the answer to that question on this Ploughshares podcast, "Trump's Finger on the Nuclear Button." I urge you to listen to it.

Trump's Finger on the Nuclear Button is a very interesting interview with Former Secretary of Defense William Perry and Tom Collina, Policy Director of Ploughshares. It helped me understand the history of this issue.

The nuclear missile response system is DESIGNED to happen incredibly fast and without consultation. WHY? It was set up during the Cold War, when this was the imagined scenario:

  • The Soviet Union is sending hundreds of nuclear missiles toward us. Many of their missiles are aimed at our nuclear silos (because they know where they are) so that the U.S. will not be able to respond in kind. SO the President has only minutes to use those missiles before they will be destroyed. This will not prevent our country from being devastated but at least it will assure that the Soviet Union goes down with us.

This is why the President cannot wait to think a while or consult with anyone. He MUST be able to act within minutes on his own -- not to save US, but to destroy our enemy.

And on the Soviet side, the same plan existed. If they found out WE were sending missiles to take out THEIR missiles (because we know where they are), they would use their own missiles immediately to take US out.

This is what is called Mutual Assured Destruction, aka M.A.D. Presumably this created a balance that kept the superpowers from incinerating each other. Yes, Bloggelinis, this is what the Patriarchy thinks of when it thinks of balance.

Obviously, M.A.D. is, as its acronym suggests, a totally insane idea. And if it ever did make sense, it doesn't make any sense now.

WHY IT NO LONGER MAKES ANY SENSE AT ALL
FOR THE PRESIDENT TO HAVE
SOLE AND UNQUESTIONED POWER
OVER THE NUCLEAR FOOTBALL:

ONE: The Cold War has been over for 30 years! The Soviet Union no longer exists, and neither does the scenario that requires Mutual Assured Destruction. I mean, come on! Putin, Russia's leader, is Trump's BUDDY!

TWO: The only time the missiles were ALMOST deployed were FALSE ALARMS! And now, with all the hacking going on, we can only look forward to more and more false alarms. And a false alarm, not caught soon enough, would cause an attack.

THREE: NOBODY can destroy all OUR missiles, because we now have nuclear submarines skulking around underwater all over the world. So there! Put that in your pipe and smoke it, Enemy, whoever you are!

Needless to say, the real solution is to get rid of ALL nuclear weapons.

SO, WHAT CAN WE DO TO PREVENT
TRUMP FROM USING A NUCLEAR WEAPON
IN THE NEXT FOUR DAYS?

Former Secretary of Defense Perry feels that there is far less danger of Trump going nuclear precisely BECAUSE there has been so much public discussion about it. So everything that Pelosi and everyone else has done to expose the issue has made us safer, according to him. That being said, if Trump DOES make the attempt, then we are dependent on someone along the chain of command simply refusing to do what he has sworn to do, which is follow orders.

ONCE TRUMP IS GONE, WHAT CAN WE DO
SO THAT WE WILL NEVER FIND OURSELVES
IN THIS POSITION AGAIN?

ONE: Congress must pass a law saying there will be NO FIRST USE of nuclear weapons by the United States. Senator Warren has already submitted such a bill and we must urge her to submit it to the newly Democratic Senate.

TWO: Congress must pass a law demanding SHARED AUTHORITY TO LAUNCH a missile. That is, both Congress and the President would have to agree to it.

These are two things that must happen in the first two years of Biden's Presidency, when he has both houses of Congress on his side.

Then, if we end up with another crazy or drunken President who decides to blow up the world, the Football-carrying assistant can say, "I'm sorry, Mr. President. First of all, just in case you haven't noticed, nobody has attacked us with nuclear weapons. Second of all, even if they had, you've got to talk to Congress about it first. So I ain't giving you the Football! Stop it! Get your hands off!"

As former Secretary Perry said in the Ploughshares interview, "If you’re about to take an action to end our civilization, there’s no need to rush into it."

So Bloggelinis, please contact Senator Warren and ask her to submit her bill outlawing a first strike with nuclear weapons as soon as possible! And if you start worrying in the next four days, just calm yourself by sending calming thoughts to Trump -- "May Trump be peaceful." I just tried it. It felt good. Terry

Sent January 8, 2021: First, the Good News...

Let us pause for a moment to savor what happened in Georgia. Very soon a Black preacher and a Jew will be walking into the Senate to represent that peach of a state, Georgia.

Raphael Warnock is the first Black elected to the Senate by the voters of a former Confederate state.

Jon Ossof is the first Jewish Senator elected by a Southern state since 1879.

Warnock has been working on social justice issues as a pastor for his entire career as a minister.

Ossof was an intern in the office of the great Congressman John Lewis. He is 33 years old, the youngest person elected to the Senate since Joe Biden in 1973.

Warnock's opponent, Kelly Loeffler, is half-owner of the WNBA team, the Atlanta Dream. Because of Loeffler's racist remarks, many team members campaigned against her...
...And they're now demanding that she sell her share of the team.

To paraphrase Bob Dylan, "Something is happening and you don't know what it is, do you, Mister Republican?"

I just love the expression on those women's faces. Usually people are SMILING when they're posing for a photo to show their support of a candidate. But these women mean SERIOUS BUSINESS. They are risking their careers by wearing those t-shirts. The WNBA has been out in front, leading other professional athletes to become politically outspoken, to use their public platform to fight for change.

I don't really have any bad news I want to talk about. But I just want to say that it is ridiculous to expect Vice-President Pence to lead in ousting his boss through the 25th Amendment. Not only is it not Pence's style or character or politics. But he would become a marked man. For the rest of his life, he would live in fear of the Trump crazies looking to take him out. I don't think you can ask/expect/push someone to put himself in that position. He might already be marked by refusing to do the impossible for Trump. You cannot ask him to go further.

And besides, the ONLY way to keep Trump from running for President in 2024 is to impeach him now and forbid him all future federal office. Really, don't you think it's worth it to eliminate that possibility, that PROBABILITY? Even if he's leaving the White House soon and it would be a distraction at the beginning of Biden's Presidency. We need to drive a stake through this vampire's heart.

And now for a couple of holiday photos:
First is Elizabeth and me on Christmas Day. Elizabeth said that Icelanders eat chocolate and read poetry aloud on Christmas, so we decided to do that. I regret that I look like I'm eating a turd.
A good time was had by all. People should read poetry aloud more often. Even if I don't understand a whole poem, there's almost always at least one line that evokes something in me.

And on New Year's Eve day, we climbed to the top of Twin Peaks, the highest point in San Francisco. It was clear and we could see Mt. Diablo, 60 miles away. I love the wonderful graffiti combined with the view.

Well, Bloggelinis, we were all wiped out BEFORE the insurrection. I watched it with friends, all of us alone in our apartments, on Zoom. I felt like I was having a party -- since I was Zoom host. And then it started getting scary. Jerry said it was GOOD that the shit was finally hitting the fan. I said, "From your lips to God's ear." It does seem like he's right. So sad it had to come to this. But there it is.
Love to you all.

Sent January 13, 2021: ADMIRAL RAT FLEES SHIP!

I'm TOTALLY THRILLED and breathing a huge sigh of relief, now that the biggest rat of all, Mitch McConnell, is leaving the sinking ship of Trump. Hell, I feel like I haven't been breathing AT ALL since election night 2016, when Trump was declared the winner of the Electoral College majority.

Oh wait a minute. Let me recall for a moment that one precious day of breathing and celebration, the Saturday after the election last year when the mainstream press called the election for Biden. How lovely that was, all of us dancing in the street -- all over the world.

And then I went back to holding my breath again as the drumbeat of "Stop the Steal!" grew louder and louder.

But now, at least this morning, I breathing freely for a few hours because the Enabler-in-Chief, Senate MINORITY leader Mitch McConnell, decided Trump has gone too far. Mitch is open to impeachment.

There's nothing like needing to hide from violent seditionists to give you a bit of clarity about your life's work.

And Rep. Liz Cheney, #3 Republican in the House now actually calls for impeachment (McConnell has just indicated he's "open" to it.) Cheney said: "There has never been a greater betrayal by a president of the United States." Maybe not, Liz, but remember that whole scandal over Trump blackmailing the Ukraine President to get dirt on Biden's son? That came preeeeeetty close, don't you agree, Liz? Remember that, Liz? I don't recall you getting upset about THAT.

And how about Trump's very recent ham-handed phone call to the Secretary of State of Georgia? The President tried -- and failed -- to bully Rafenspurger into conjuring up 11,780 Trumpian votes from thin air. You seemed to be pretty comfortable with THAT too, right Liz?

Bloggelinis, let us never forget that the Senate had an opportunity in January 2020 to get rid of Trump by impeaching him. And the ONLY Republican who came through that ordeal with flying colors was Mitt Romney. May he be blessed with really good security guards for the rest of his life.

And now, here we are, with the most powerful Republican in Congress, Mitch McConnell, backing away from the precipice of the abortive coup, like a lemming who suddenly came to his senses. Instead, he turns from lemming into Rat and runs like hell. But he is STILL accountable for the untold millions that he urged to plunge off the cliff before him, by his unwavering loyalty to Trump.

We as a nation are not very good at holding people accountable. Which is how we got to this point.

Just for starters: Confederate President Jefferson Davis, and Gen. Robert E. Lee were traitors under the U.S. Constitution's definition of treason. Yet neither man -- nor any other Confederate -- was ever tried for the crime.

Strange, isn't it?

As I said before, all the Congresspeople who questioned the fair election of the Democratic candidate are guilty of attempting to overthrow our democracy and should be held accountable by being expelled from office. The only difference from the earlier blog where I talked about this is that the list of traitors is LONGER. If I remember correctly, it was 126 then and now it stands at 147.

We still have to figure out how to deal with the millions who have slid into a form of insanity, as a result of the steady diet of Trump's lies and delusions. What to do? What to do? How about.... an Apology Tour? Yes! How about the chastened Republicans, like McConnell and Cheney, traveling around the country, talking to the Trumpers about the terrible mistake they made --- over and over again?

And let's NOT go back to "normal" --subverting democracy the quiet, old-fashioned way with Big Money and voter suppression.

HEY!
HOW ABOUT HOLDING
THE CONSTITUTION ACCOUNTABLE?
Let's get rid of that giant remnant of slavery,
the Electoral College!

Bloggelinis, we've got a lot of work to do! And then there's global warming... Phew... Well, it's good to be needed, right?

January 4, 2020: ARE WE THERE YET?!?

Whew. Okay. Seems like a long time since that glorious Saturday when we all danced in the streets for the victory of Biden & Harris & Sanity, doesn't it?

Why am I reminded at this moment of the Marx Brothers' hilarious routine that ends with them tearing the Sanity Clause out of their contract because "There ain't no Sanity Clause!" I'd say you're in deep water when a Marx Brothers routine seems to make more sense than the workings of the Republican Party. Check it out.

I am absolutely certain that there ain't no Sanity Clause in the Republican party today.

In a way, it's understandable that Trump would refuse to acknowledge the brick wall he's barreling toward, considering what's happened in the past. After all, a lot of brick walls have dissolved since he threw his hat in the ring long long ago:

ONE: He decides to run for the Republican nomination for President. According to many, this was simply a way to get lots of attention so he could negotiate a better deal for his NBC contract. He immediately loses all connection with NBC after his first speech attacks Mexicans as rapists and murderers. He is (almost) universally condemned for his racist, and anti-immigrant statement, and many believe he's ruined politically. BUT he wins the Republican nomination. First brick wall dissolves. So far, this is the only election in which he has actually gotten the most votes.

TWO: During the Presidential campaign, the horrific pussy-grabbing tapes are revealed, in which he absolutely rejoices in his sexual assaults on women. Even Trump HIMSELF says his campaign is dead in the water. However, many people are more disturbed by Clinton's extremely minor email sins than by Trump's sexual crimes. While losing the popular vote, he wins the Electoral College vote and becomes President. Second brick wall dissolves.

THREE: An anonymous whistleblowing patriot reveals Trump's "perfect" phone call with Ukrainian president Zelensky. During this call, Trump attempts to blackmail Zelensky by threatening to withhold promised military aid unless Zelensky agrees to dig up or invent some dirt on Biden's son that will be useful in Trump's re-election campaign. For this traitorous act, Trump is impeached by the House of Representatives -- only the third President to have been stained in this way. BUT the Senate, where the trial takes place, is majority Republican and refuses to even consider evidence. So there is no trial, and Trump remains in office. Senator Collins of Maine says she believesTrump has learned his lesson. And he HAS. But it's not the lesson of chastisement that Collins imagines. He has learned that he can do anything he wants and get away with it, because the third brick wall just dissolved!

There are surely more brick walls that were vaporized along the way. But that's what happens when outrage is piled on outrage. The bar gets lowered and lowered -- until you forget outrages that would have, in an earlier more innocent time, become indelible memories.

Now Trump is facing:
  • Biden's very large victory in the popular vote
  • Biden's victory in the Electoral College
  • Losses in more the 50 lawsuits
  • Refusal of cooperation by most election functionaries, Democrat AND Republican

BUT all he sees is the Fourth Brick Wall, which will certainly dissolve as all the others did, with the eager assistance of the Republican Party.

So he just keeps going.

Hey, he told us a long time ago that he could shoot someone in broad daylight on Fifth Avenue and get away with it. We did not understand at the time that he wasn't referring to murdering a human being. He was talking about, ALWAYS talking about, assassinating Democracy herself!

On Saturday, like any Mafia Don in a tight corner, he put the squeeze on the Georgia Secretary of State, and we get such pearls of subtlety as:
“So what are we going to do here, folks? I only need eleven thousand votes. Fellas, I need eleven thousand votes. Give me a break.”
Give the President of the United States a break, fellas.

In fact, this doesn't even make any sense in terms of overturning the election. If somehow Trump DID convince the Secretary of State to fabricate enough Trump votes to switch the outcome in Georgia, he STILL wouldn't have a chance of catching Biden!

Maybe Trump just cannot accept being beaten by a Black woman in a Southern state. "Vengeance is mine!" saieth Stacey Abrams, who narrowly lost the Georgia Governorship, probably because of the suppression of Black votes.

Dear Bloggelinis: I'm tired of all this. Are you tired of all this? Life is difficult and interesting enough without trying to figure out how to respond to a deranged narcissist battling on and on and ON to become a dictator. But yet we must respond. We must hold Trump's Republican enablers accountable for their own treasonous actions in support of Der Toddler. Please contact your Representatives today and tell them that -- just as when Lincoln won the Presidency -- we must expel all the traitors from Congress who refuse to accept Biden's election. There are more and more traitors every day!
Yours in political outrage and exhaustion. Terry

P.S. Just to end a on a positive note, here's a photo of a rare siting of a painted bunting in a park in Maryland.
I never knew such a fabulous bird existed in this country! Must have been thrilling to see it in nature.

A FEW GOOD THINGS
ABOUT A BAD YEAR

#1:

WE FIRED TRUMP!
WE FIRED TRUMP!
WE FIRED TRUMP!
WE FIRED TRUMP!
Yes, we did. And while Der Toddler maintains that his re-election would have been a slam-dunk if it weren't for the pandemic -- nothing could be further from the truth, in my opinion. The pandemic made campaigning much more difficult for the Democrats. While Biden was in the basement trying to figure out how to balance campaign rallies with health precautions, the Prez and his Trumpian minions were gathering by the maskless thousands, spreading the Lyin' King's words, along with the virus.

We Dems looked forward to a campaign with 1,000s of foot soldiers knocking on doors in all the purple-hued states. I myself committed to spending all of October in Pennsylvania. But I never set foot outside of San Francisco and neither do I know anyone who canvassed for Biden in a swing state unless they lived there already -- and that started very late in the campaign. Door-to-door canvassing is both the least efficient and the most effective way to convince voters. Even if people disagree with you, they're very impressed that you took the trouble to show up on their doorstep.

No, the Democrats were far more hobbled by the pandemic than was Trump.

And while it was clear to millions that Trump's incompetence and cavalier dismissal of the health threat caused unknown 1000s of unnecessary deaths -- there were other millions who, not having any experience to compare with the pandemic, thought that Der Toddler was doing the best he could do.

And let us not forget that all those millions -- clear and unclear, Dem or GOP or or Green or Libertarian or independent -- every single one of them got a check for $1200 signed personally by Der Toddler. At the time Trump demanded the checks be delayed so that his name could be printed on them, I thought, "Oh yeah, another pointless exercise in megalomania." But when the NY Times interviewed people of color who voted for Trump, one older African-American woman (and Obama supporter) said she thought he'd done well with the virus -- and she appreciated that $1200 from him very much. Very very much. How many people voted for Trump simply because he had "given" them $1200? More than a few, I think. So, even if getting "Donald Trump" on every single check WAS motivated by simple narcissism, it turned out to also be a brilliant political move.

AND let us not forget the rather large amount of VOTER SUPPRESSION that preceded the campaign. That doesn't get mentioned anymore, because Biden won. But that doesn't mean that a sizable number of Democrats were not kicked off the voter rolls or otherwise prevented from voting. It means that
We worked hard enough
to overcome all the drawbacks!
We got the word out to the American people
and they rejected Trump!
(Of course we also rejected him the first time, but that's another story.)

LET US CONTINUE TO REJOICE
IN OUR HARD-WON VICTORY
AS WE CONTEMPLATE 2020
IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR!

#2

I would like to salute:
The
incredible
amazing
stupendous
creativity, imagination, and resilience
of the American people.
How we have entertained each other,
How we have made each other laugh,
How we have comforted each other,
How we have reached out to each other
How we have supported each other
in so many new and old ways.

I'm not going to bother to give examples. We all know so many. I am deeply moved.

#3

And this rotten, contemptible year ends with.....
The legalization of abortion in Argentina!
As Senator Norma Durango said,
"Abortion is a reality, and it has been taking place since time immemorial. Legalizing it brings the practice out of the shadows."
This is a Catholic country, with a growing evangelical movement -- both deeply opposed to abortion and opposed to seeing women as equals. They both in turn have been opposed by a VIBRANT movement of feminist women who have worked HARD for over eight years to build a popular movement to pressure the federal government to make abortion legal. I mean, this is a country that was sending women to prison for MISCARRIAGES, just on the possibility that it MIGHT have been an abortion. Can you imagine WANTING to be pregnant, and not only feeling the terrible loss of a miscarriage but being IMPRISONED for it? I know this also happens in Mexico. Argentina is seen as a bellwether for social change in Latin America. So this bodes well for the women in the other countries.

I say:
If the women of Argentina can get rid of the law against abortion, then WE can get rid of the Electoral College!

Am I right?
When you're right, you're right!

And lastly:
#4

This is wholly personal:
From 1999 to 2011, my immediate family needed me, as first my father, then my sister, and then my mother became ill and died. It was a great blessing in my life that I could be there for them.

When my mother was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2010, I worried how I would handle her loss, because I need to be needed. And since she died in 2011, it has indeed been hard for me, to feel that no single person actually NEEDS me.

Yes, Carolyn and I are deeply entwined in terms of friendship and work. But she also has a husband and children and grandchildren and in-laws and many friends -- ALL of whom need HER, because once you have Carolyn in your life, you need her. But I have never felt Carolyn needed ME.

But you, Bloggelinis, you have expressed to me how much my blogs have meant to you. Just recently, Gail wrote me that she felt her day had an A-side and a B-side, like an old 45 record. The A-side was finding out that someone close to her was very ill. And the B-side was reading my blog, "Night of the Radishes." And that these two things somehow balanced each other.

I feel needed, for the first time since my mother died. I feel tethered to the earth again, and that is a good feeling.

Thank you, Bloggelinis, for needing me. I will continue to try to be worthy of you. Terry

A Cheery Sighting on my Fillmore Ramble. Not sure you can tell that it's "Love" not "Live" because of the folds in the fabric. Just a simple letter from Democracy to Trump.

ONE: HOPE
Of course I'm wildly relieved that Trump will not be President. And while it now seems so obvious that he couldn't possibly win, I must remind myself that there was nothing predestined about the outcome in the popular vote or the Electoral College (Boo! Hiss!) vote. AND, as we witnessed in minute, grisly detail, there was nothing predestined in Biden's victory surviving all the Republican attempts to destroy democracy AFTER the election. AND we still don't know what will happen between now and January 21. However, here is a link to a video visualization of one possibility. (You gotta scroll down a tiny bit once you're on Twitter.)
Ahh, the sometimes delightful miracles of technology!

BUT but but but but..... Many of us a bit to the left of the mainstream are concerned to the point of worry or even alarm as to what kind of President Joe Biden will turn out to be. His appointments in the area of the environment seem to be very good to me. Correct me if I'm wrong. And, since Global Warming is the biggest crisis we face, that is most important. Some of the other appts. -- much less promising of real change. HOWEVER, I'm reading Obama's autobiography right now, and I have found good news about Regular Joe on pp. 318-319.

This is the setting: It is Obama's first meeting of the National Security Council, and everybody is pressuring him to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. I should say, ALMOST everybody. Obama writes:
Among the principals, only Joe Biden voiced his misgivings. He had traveled to Kabul on my behalf during the transition, and what he saw and heard on the trip -- particularly during a contentious meeting with Karzai-- had convinced him that we need to rethink our entire approach to Afghanistan. I knew Joe also still felt burned by having supported the Iraq invasion years earlier. Whatever the mix of reasons, he saw Afghanistan as a dangerous quagmire and urged me to delay a deployment, suggesting it would be easier to put troops in once we had a clear strategy as opposed to trying to pull troops out after we'd made a mess with a bad one...

With the meeting adjourned, I headed out the door and was on my way up the stairs to the Oval when Joe caught up to me and gripped my arm. "Listen to me, boss," he said. "Maybe I've been around this town for too long, but one thing I know is when these generals are trying to box in a new President." He brought his face a few inches frome mine and stage-whispered, "Don't let them jam you."
In the next NSC meeting, everyone voted to send 20,000 more troops -- EXCEPT Regular Joe. And, as it turns out, Biden was totally right about Afghanistan. It has always been a dangerous quagmire. Whatever actions Obama took made no changes in that.

So I see, in Obama's recounting, many good things about our President-Elect:
  • He is willing to contradict the generals.
  • He is most anxious to AVOID making more mistakes like his vote for the invasion of Iraq. Amazingly, he seems to have LEARNED from his experience. That is not a common trait among human beings.
  • He speaks with what must be called wisdom, in saying it is easier to go slower and not have to extricate yourself from a mess.
  • He is willing to keep pushing when he thinks he's right -- ie GRIPPING Obama's arm and forcing him to listen.
  • He has learned from his very long experience in Government how things work, and this knowledge is useful.
  • He is fine being the only vote for his point of view.

That's quite a few good things, don't you agree? SO I HAVE EVEN MORE HOPE THAN I HAD BEFORE!

ONE-A: OBAMA BOOK CLUB
By the way, I bought Obama's book because I joined the Obama Book Club, which is organized by Manny's in SF but has members from all over the country and is open to anyone. It meets every Wednesday 5-7pm online and deals with a different section of the autobiography every time. It begins with someone who was part of the Obama administration speaking and answering questions from Manny. I went to the one last week, but I'd been Zooming too much and I couldn't hang in there. I'm going back this Wednesday.

I highly recommend A Promised Land. Obama gives you a warts-and-all picture of his Presidency. It is such a very surreal thing to be President, no? He thinks so too.

I can't help but compare him to FDR, who also entered in the midst of the breakdown of the economy. I really see Obama as being just too inexperienced to take the risk of doing anything radical about the economic crisis he was handed, unlike FDR. Definitely a book worth reading.

TWO: FILLMORE RAMBLE #1

It's possible that a couple of these photos have appeared before, but I walked much further on Fillmore Street than before.

The first part of the walk is in the Lower Haight neighborhood.
Images on the boarded up windows of Zip Zap, a very hip hair salon where I used to get my hair cut when I first moved to San Francisco and lived in the Haight.

These two images below are from the window of the International Cafe, on the corner of Haight and Fillmore. This is one of those places that has music, politics, and cheap food. I've had some great chats with the owners, who are Arab, I think. Somehow gentrification has not found a foothold at the International. And it looks like it's surviving. At least, it was still open.

This is my first sighting of the poster, "Lower Hate." What a great use of the name of a neighborhood. Lower Haight... Lower Hate! Get it?!?

I had to come here to find out about the mask campaign of Squid Vicious.

Below is the poster for what I'm sure was the last live show at the International, dated March 28. I wonder if even THAT happened.

But the good news is that the International will be closed ONLY on 12/25. Three cheers for this survivor!

What is it about a diagonal? It has ENERGY! Often, I take several photos at a spot and end up using one of the diagonals. I started doing diagonal photos in order to squeeze in more info in a vertical image. Now I just like them better.

This mural deserves its own solo.
The one below is just stunning and I think the work of the same artist who did the heart above. So powerful to come upon this huge streaming rainbow woman, with all her beads and sequins and jewels.

And now here we are in The Fillmore District, which is still an African-American neighborhood, despite the "redevelopment" of the area in an effort that many thought should be called "Negro Removal" rather than redevelopment.

Love the slogan below, "Feel More in the Fillmore." Great use of language, and very apt.

Well, Bloggelinis, that's all for today. Next ramble will be Fillmore #2. What do you think of this format of some writing on politics or whatever and some rambling in the same blog? I'm liking it. I think it'll end up giving you more rambles.
Please treasure yourselves. Terry
