The last scene in LESBO SOLO takes place in this very synagogue in Los Angeles where I will be performing. Beth Chayim Chadashim (aka BCC) is close to where my parents lived and also happens to be the first gay synagogue in the world. So I am so thrilled to be performing this play there. I've been wanting this performance to happen for over a year. My beloved high school teacher, Harriet Perl, was an honored member of the congregation, and her story is an an important part of my story. Some members of my high school who were taught by Miss Perl are coming to the performance.
I never lived in L.A. after I graduated high school. I was never an L.A. person -- I hate to drive. I have performed all over the world (including Cuba and South Africa), but I have never performed in Los Angeles. The opportunity never arose, but I also knew that my parents didn't want me to perform in their town. My mother actually told me that in so many words. So I never sought out an opportunity. My mother, bless her spirit, had no subtext. She just said what she thought.
This will be a profound homecoming for me.
Dear Bloggellinis: Look for a blog about my experience in L.A. next week. Terry
