Whew. Okay. Seems like a long time since that glorious Saturday when we all danced in the streets for the victory of Biden & Harris & Sanity, doesn't it?
Why am I reminded at this moment of the Marx Brothers' hilarious routine that ends with them tearing the Sanity Clause out of their contract because "There ain't no Sanity Clause!" I'd say you're in deep water when a Marx Brothers routine seems to make more sense than the workings of the Republican Party.
Check it out.
I am absolutely certain that there ain't no Sanity Clause in the Republican party today.
In a way, it's understandable that Trump would refuse to acknowledge the brick wall he's barreling toward, considering what's happened in the past. After all, a lot of brick walls have dissolved since he threw his hat in the ring long long ago:
ONE: He decides to run for the Republican nomination for President. According to many, this was simply a way to get lots of attention so he could negotiate a better deal for his NBC contract. He immediately loses all connection with NBC after his first speech attacks Mexicans as rapists and murderers. He is (almost) universally condemned for his racist, and anti-immigrant statement, and many believe he's ruined politically. BUT he wins the Republican nomination. First brick wall dissolves. So far, this is the only election in which he has actually gotten the most votes.
TWO: During the Presidential campaign, the horrific pussy-grabbing tapes are revealed, in which he absolutely rejoices in his sexual assaults on women. Even Trump HIMSELF says his campaign is dead in the water. However, many people are more disturbed by Clinton's extremely minor email sins than by Trump's sexual crimes. While losing the popular vote, he wins the Electoral College vote and becomes President. Second brick wall dissolves.
THREE: An anonymous whistleblowing patriot reveals Trump's "perfect" phone call with Ukrainian president Zelensky. During this call, Trump attempts to blackmail Zelensky by threatening to withhold promised military aid unless Zelensky agrees to dig up or invent some dirt on Biden's son that will be useful in Trump's re-election campaign. For this traitorous act, Trump is impeached by the House of Representatives -- only the third President to have been stained in this way. BUT the Senate, where the trial takes place, is majority Republican and refuses to even consider evidence. So there is no trial, and Trump remains in office. Senator Collins of Maine says she believesTrump has learned his lesson. And he HAS. But it's not the lesson of chastisement that Collins imagines. He has learned that he can do anything he wants and get away with it, because the third brick wall just dissolved!
There are surely more brick walls that were vaporized along the way. But that's what happens when outrage is piled on outrage. The bar gets lowered and lowered -- until you forget outrages that would have, in an earlier more innocent time, become indelible memories.
Now Trump is facing:
- Biden's very large victory in the popular vote
- Biden's victory in the Electoral College
- Losses in more the 50 lawsuits
- Refusal of cooperation by most election functionaries, Democrat AND Republican
BUT all he sees is the Fourth Brick Wall, which will certainly dissolve as all the others did, with the eager assistance of the Republican Party.
So he just keeps going.
Hey, he told us a long time ago that he could shoot someone in broad daylight on Fifth Avenue and get away with it. We did not understand at the time that he wasn't referring to murdering a human being. He was talking about, ALWAYS talking about, assassinating Democracy herself!
On Saturday, like any Mafia Don in a tight corner, he put the squeeze on the Georgia Secretary of State, and we get such pearls of subtlety as:
