Your Blogmistress never dared to dream she would one day be in a calendar -- and for the month of March yet -- Women's History Month! This calendar is a wonderful gift from OUTWORDS, the brainchild of Mason Funk, to the people who participated in his project:

"OUTWORDS is the only project in the United States specifically dedicated to capturing professional quality on-camera interviews with LGBTQ+ elders from all cultural, economic, political and geographical areas and backgrounds."

OUTWORDS is really quite wonderful. You can go to....

theoutwordsarchive.org

....and watch video interviews with all kinds of fascinating people. When Blackberri died, I went to the archive and spent some time with the video avatar of this wonderful folk singer who was the first out gay person to perform on television. What a great feeling to be with Blackberri, to learn more about him FROM him, at the moment I was grieving his loss.

So dear Mason decided to make a calendar to send to all the folks who had participated in OUTWORDS. It was a big surprise to me. And I was excited to see it even BEFORE I got to March. And then, when I DID get to March... Look who's sharing the month (starting from top left):

  • Col. Grethe Cammermeyer & Rep. Karen Clark
  • The "BLACK RADICAL WOMEN" exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum
  • The WOMEN'S PROJECT
  • Michigan State Capitol for Pride
  • Little Old Moi in the 1989 San Francisco Gay Pride Parade
  • The Combahee River Collective
  • Gloria Steinem & Susan Allen, AND...
  • Holly Near, Odetta, & Ronnie Gilbert.

Quite a classy crew, don't you agree? I am honored and astounded to be on the same page with these amazing activists and artists. However, although I am LITERALLY on the same page, I am not METAPHORICALLY "on the same page."

In my life, the answer to the question, "Which one is not like the other ones?" often turns out to be me. That is true IN SPADES for this calendar page. That makes it all the sweeter. I'm so grateful to Mason for having the guts (aka bad judgment) to include me as one of the Miss Marches, capturing one of the greatest performances of my life.

Now, my little Bloggellinis, come gather round to hear how Blogmistress ended up with a dildo coming out of her hat and a belt of phallic vegetables (not to mention all the stuffed gloves), making a spectacle of herself on Market Street, the last Sunday in June in the year 1989.

Well. My friend Fraser and I were taking a class in gay literature, taught through City College of San Francisco. Fraser and I always walked home together.  One night we were chatting about the upcoming Gay Pride Parade, which was about two months away.

We both loved the Parade. But neither of us had ever organized a contingent. In those days, we watched from the sidelines until we saw a contingent we liked or someone we knew. We would go join them and march as long as we felt like marching, go back to the sidelines, maybe get something to eat,   come back, start marching again, rinse and repeat. It was all very loose. (That's not possible anymore now that they have barriers along the route.)

Fraser and I agreed it was time for us to GIVE BACK to this fabulous and beloved community event that had given us so much. We tried to think of amusing names for contingents we might organize. Fraser came up with "Gays Named Bruce." That was Fraser's birth name, which he hated.  He had changed it a year earlier. At the time, "Bruce" was a stereotypical name for an effeminate gay man. That was the main reason he changed his name to Fraser. My idea for a contingent was "Lesbians for Penetration." I thought it would be funny to mock the stereotype of lesbians as women who couldn't bear the thought of any kind of a projectile inside them, let alone the unpleasant person attached to the projectile. We both congratulated ourselves on being hilarious, and dropped the matter for a few weeks.

Well, it turned out that I had dropped it for a few weeks. Fraser had just dropped it. When I brought the idea up again as the Parade got closer, he protested that he had never had any intention of following through and organizing any kind of contingent -- let alone one called "Gays Named Bruce."

I could understand that. Fraser had a kind of soft-spoken, elegant demeanor. He was indeed a gentleman, whereas I was no lady. In truth, I'm an exhibitionist.  I decided to forge ahead with Lesbians for Penetration. So I went about organizing my contingent.

There was one teeny tiny miniscule  difficulty: Absolutely no one would march with me.

Oh, I was acquainted with plenty of lesbians, some of whom I KNEW, from personal experience, were pro-penetration in the bedroom. But absolutely no one --- and I mean not one of the dykes I encountered at a time when dykes were plentiful in the city -- not one, no matter their sexual proclivities, was willing to carry a sign or march NEXT to me while I carried a sign with the words "Lesbians for Penetration" on it. Somehow the image of the virgin lesbian was sacred to all of them, although often honored only in the breach.

I KNEW I was being naughty when I came up with the idea, but I didn't realize until then that I had stumbled upon a FULL-BLOWN TABOO!

It was like a red flag to a bull. The more people refused to march with me, the more I relished the prospect of doing it. One day, I encountered the Lesbian Avengers in the Castro.  The Avengers were notorious  --  the most rowdy dyke organization in the city. They were signing up women to march with them in the Parade. I said brightly to one of them, "I'm marching with the Lesbians for Penetration contingent!" She gave me a look of such horror. Or was it disgust?

Really, what was the big deal? Didn't anybody have a sense of humor anymore? Did we really have to pretend that we had orgasms by dancing around in a circle holding hands until we fell to the earth exhausted?

Anyhow, who WAS buying all those dildos at Good Vibrations, the sex toy emporium?

Finally, the day of the San Francisco Gay Pride Parade arrived. I got dressed, cut a little hole in my straw hat for the dildo, and went to the fridge to make my phallic vegetable belt. I was raring to go! My housemate, Iris, and I would walk together down to Castro and Market, where the Parade would begin. Iris was deep into bondage and SM at the time, but she also refused to be in my contingent. Part way down, I had to re-tie my shoe and handed her my sign while I attended to my laces. After a few seconds, she wailed, "Oh my god, I'm holding your sign! Get it away from me!" She threw it down.

I saw that red flag, I snorted, pawed the ground, tossed my head and got ready to march!  I would show Iris and the Lesbian Avengers and... everyone! I got in line behind the Eagle, a big bar float with loud music, to give me energy. Behind me was the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. We started walking. I made sure there was lots of space between me and the Eagle float. After all, I was a CONTINGENT -- admittedly the only solo contingent, but STILL a contingent! The SF AIDS Foundation made absolutely sure that there was a LOT of space between them and me. Very shortly, we arrived in front of the crowd filling the sidewalk, waiting for the Parade to start.

The San Francisco Gay Pride Parade is a really big deal. An enormous number of people come to town to see it. It's massive -- 300,000 people and more crammed on the sidewalk, lining the street all the way down Market Street to the Embarcadero, waiting to see what the gay community came up with that year. Would the crowd get the joke? Or would I be met by the same silent disapproval  I encountered from the Lesbian Avengers? At that last moment I suddenly had a terrible feeling that I might have made a BIG MISTAKE.

As I started marching, I saw puzzlement in people's faces, heard the titters, the giggles... And then the crowd burst into a giant roar of laughter. Thousands and thousands and thousands of people were surprised and delighted into a giant roar of laughter. It was glorious.  As I continued down Market, I was met always with thousands bursting into laughter as they read my sign, saw all the lewd white hands and ogled my salacious carrot, leek and cucumber. I pranced all the way, waggling my dildo at the joyous crowd. Everything I'd experienced leading up to the parade -- the disapproval, the disdain, the prudishness --it was all dissolved by the Gay Pride Parade, that one day in the year when everyone is free to be themselves, when anything is possible and everyone is beautiful.

That enormous ocean of laughter engulfed me. I felt like that ocean was lifting me up and carrying me down Market Street. Oh, I pranced, you'd better believe it. I knew my back would be killing me the next day, but I didn't care.  I never stopped prancing until I got to the end of the march, at the Embarcadero.

And then it was over.

Marching as Lesbians for Penetration was one of the great performances of my life. I've performed all over the world, but there has never been anything to match that day I pranced down Market Street and made 300,000 people roar with laughter.

And now that day has been enshrined in the OUTWORDS 2023 Calendar. I couldn't be more thrilled.

All for now, Bloggellinis!

RIGHT: Officer Caroline Edwards of the Capitol Police describing her battle with the attackers on Jan. 6. She was knocked unconscious twice. Both times, she woke up, and returned to the fray.

RIGHT: Commission Chairman Bennie Thompson, whose magisterial presence lent a gravitas to the proceedings. Representing Mississippi in Congress, without saying a word, Thompson was a constant reminder of the recent past when Black people in Mississippi were kept from voting.

LEFT:: Shaye Moss, a Georgia election worker, testifying to the harassment and terror she experienced after Trump and Giuliani accused her of subverting the vote count. Ruby Freeman, her mother, sits behind her. Freeman, also an election worker, suffered greatly and testified with great passion and anger.

BELOW LEFT: Two Trump supporters, arrested for assaulting the Capitol, testify they came to Washington D.C. on Jan. 6 because Trump asked them to come. BELOW RIGHT: The tweets of two who came to the Capitol on Jan. 6

RIGHT: Cassidy Hutchinson, aide to Trump's Chief of Staff. She was on the outdoor podium for Trump's rally and witnessed his fury when he was told that people with guns were being barred by the metal detectors. He demanded they be let in: "They're not here to hurt me."

Left: Representative Liz Cheney, Vice-Chair of the January 6 Committee. Formerly a rising star in the Republican Party, she chose to sacrifice her political career in order to participate in this effort to investigate and hold accountable those responsible for the insurrection, particularly then-President Trump.

I watched all the hearings of the January 6 Committee live. I was spellbound the whole time. Now the hearings are over, and I want to look back and savor this amazing phenomenon.

Ya done good, January 6 Committee. What an exciting and moving story you told. It was the tale of a battle between an evil man who wished to become a dictator, and the courageous people who believed in democracy and refused to kowtow to his will.

I'm proud of everyone on the Committee, I'm proud of our democratic system that gives elected representatives the power to compel people to testify. I'm proud of everyone who testified, especially those who were reluctant. Let us never forget that almost everyone who testified was a Republican. It was not in their political interest to speak to the Committee. Some did refuse to testify, although they were legally bound to do it. Some did testify and incessantly pleaded the Fifth Amendment, contributing nothing. So every single witness who testified fully and honestly CHOSE to do it.

I am so proud of the Democratic Party. I've been waiting forever for them to stand up on their hind legs and fight for what they believe. What a tremendous, disciplined, brilliant, powerful effort this was!

I'm proud of Speaker Pelosi for refusing to accept two Republican election-deniers on the Committee. Her action provoked Minority leader McCarthy to pull the Republicans out of the committee entirely. Thank you, Rep. McCarthy, for being so stupid! And thank you, Speaker Pelosi, for whatever you did behind the scenes to shape the hearings.

I'm proud of Jamie Raskin who, when offered the vice-chairmanship of the Committee, suggested that Liz Cheney would be a better choice. (This is according to a fascinating NY Times article in the Sunday, Jan. 1 Magazine.) What kind of integrity does it take to turn down a once-in-a-lifetime career opportunity, for the sake of making the project stronger?

I'm proud of all the television people who knew how to create compelling and entertaining hearings. Let's face it, folks, that's one of our national strengths: being entertaining.

And, after reading the New York Times article, I'm especially proud of Liz Cheney, someone who I used to hate. As of today, she is no longer in Congress. Cheney had the most to lose by being on the Committee. And she lost it. She lost the race for the Republican nomination for U.S. Representative in her Wyoming district by a whopping 37%. That's quite a downfall for a popular incumbent.

According to the Times, Cheney was the indefatigable bulldog on the committee, interviewing witness after witness herself, insisting on shaping the committee's path in ways that raised the hackles of others. It is Cheney who insisted that the Committee make criminal referrals forTrump and others. This idea was condemned by some as an empty symbolic gesture, since the Committee has no power to indict anyone. But, with the backing of Chairman Thompson, Cheney pushed it through. In retrospect, the criminal referrals feel historic, and an essential pressure on the Department of Justice to make the indictments the Committee cannot.

To be honest, when the hearings began, I did not believe that Trump conspired to bring the insurrection about. I honestly thought that the insurrection just kind of happened. There was a rally and then things got out of hand. I could not comprehend that Trump would actually PLAN to make it happen, in a last desperate attempt to remain in office. I am so deeply grateful to everyone involved in the hearings for enlightening me. What an incredible journey it has been.

I believe the January 6 Committee hearings are a model, not just for our own country, but for the whole world.  When Judge Michael Luttig, a renowned conservative jurist, testified before the committee, he had this to say:

"The Congress had the highest obligation to conduct these hearings. And the hearings themselves have been historic, and perhaps never to be replicated."

I am so damn proud of US.

Here are two links --

one highly educational and one highly hilarious.

First learn, then laugh:

LINK #1

Justice Matters with Glenn Kirschner

The many crimes of Mark Meadows make him the prime candidate for prosecutors to flip against Trump.

Glenn Kirschner is a highly respected lawyer -- a law professor and former federal prosecutor. He has his own Youtube channel, on which he reports -- every day and very succinctly -- about current legal issues on the national level.

I learned so much from this video, and it's less the 5 minutes long! Kirschner has a pleasant demeanor, which makes him very easy to watch. He calls his audience "friends," and I feel like I AM his friend! He helps me understand this agonizing pursuit of justice against Trump. Justice Matters is free, brief, and has no commercials!

This is a real public service.Thank you, Glenn!

LINK #2

Alexandra Petri

I am George Santos & I would never lie to you.

One could say that George Santos, with all his insane fabrications, is just MADE for Washington Post columnist Alexandra Petri. Or one could say that Alexandra Petri, with her rapier wit and wild imagination, is just MADE for George Santos!

However you look at it, the combination of the two is a match made in Satire Heaven. I am grateful to Jew-ish George for giving Petri the perfect target.

Dear Bloggellinis: These are two of my very favorite discoveries on the internet. They are my New Year's give to you. Terry

Yes, Bloggellinis, it's that time of year ,,,,

Chanukah!

or

Hannukah!

or

Chanookah!

or

Hannekeh!

And that means it's time to sing that great Jewish holiday standard...

MOISHE THE GREEN-NOSED HERRING!!

CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE VIDEO

OF THE CRACKPOT CRONES

BRINGING "MOISHE" HOME.

"Moishe" was written by my dear Auntie Hannah, who wanted the us kids to have a Chanukah song to compete with "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer."

When Carolyn and I (aka The Crackpot Crones) created a holiday show in 2012, "CRONES FOR THE HOLIDAYS," of course we had to include "Moishe."

The last line of "Moishe," as written by Auntie Hannah, was (something like) "May you become gefilte fish." But Carolyn's future son-in-law, Will, objected to the bloodthirsty lyric. He challenged us: "Rudolph doesn't die in HIS song! Why should Moishe die?" Will was vegan. Long before many people were vegan, Will was vegan.

At first, I resisted changing the sacred family ditty. But I had to admit that Will had a very good point. Many things need to change with the times, and I finally admitted that "Moishe the Green-Nosed Herring" was one of them. So the last line became "You'll never be gefilte fish!" And, really, if Rudolph gets to go down in history for lighting the way, Moishe could at least be allowed to live.

In her final years, Auntie Hannah moved up to Modesto to live near her daughter Miriam, and attended a performance of "CRONES FOR THE HOLIDAYS" in San Francisco. So I was able to honor her by introducing her and insisting that she stand up to receive the audience's appreciation of her gift to them. That was a very nice moment for Hannah and me.

Dear Bloggelinis: I could chatter on, but it is now time for THE FINAL HEARING OF THE JANUARY 6 COMMITTEE to start! Gotta be there for this one. I know we're all praying for the same thing: That the committee will recommend indicting Trump for his insurrection. Terry

Killer Robots in SF?

REALLY?!?!

PODCASTS, EVENTS, INFO, POSTERS: LilithTheater.com

When I saw the email from Bloggellini Diana telling me about a protest at 9:30 am yesterday morning against the vote of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to buy killer robots for the police department, I knew I had to show up.

KILLER ROBOTS?!?

ARE THE 8 SUPERVISORS WHO VOTED FOR THIS (INCLUDING MY OWN) NUTS?

WHAT IS THE POTENTIAL FOR ABUSE HERE?

LET'S JUST SAY: GIGANTIC.

Why are we even talking about this?

So many of the speakers said something like, "I cannot believe I have to say these words -- No killer robots in San Francisco!." And so many of us in the crowd were saying the same thing to each other: "I cannot believe we have to protest this!" The city of San Francisco has GOT to be an oasis of sanity in a world that gets more and more absurd.

And here it is, a Killer Robot:

Isn't it cute? You can tow it behind your van! And please don't call it a killer robot. That's so crude. It's a "lethal autonomous weapon. commonly called by its acronym: L.A.W. Get it? L.A.W. enforces the law -and with no risk to the police!

The protest was called at the last minute by Supervisor Dean Preston (scrutinizing his phone in the above photo), so there weren't a lot of people there. Preston called it because there's going to be a second vote today on the killer robots. There's a chance that, if three Supervisors change their minds, we'll be done with the issue. One supervisor already has. I phoned and emailed my own supervisor, Raphael Mandelman, to tell him he was out of his fucking skull to think that a weapon like this would never be abused.

The public is, by state law, supposed to have 30 days to comment on issues like this, but the killer robot acquisition was added at the last minute to a bill that had already been approved.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle:

Police have said they would use the robots to kill only in extremely rare cases with violent suspects, such as mass shooters, suicide bombers, or others who are armed and endangering the public.. A high-ranking SFPD official would have to approve any use of the deadly robot.

You see where we're going with this. During the terrible mass shooting at the elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, the police didn't stop the killer, because they were afraid to risk their own lives. Understandably so. If only the Uvalde police had had their very own killer robot, so many little children's lives would have been saved! Certainly only "a high-ranking official" would have made the decision. And certainly, the robot would never have shot anyone except the killer.

I do understand why police would prefer sending in a robot to risking their own lives when facing a crazy person with an assault rifle. And I certainly understand why armaments manufacturers go to sleep dreaming of selling a Lethal Autonomous Weapon to every single LAW-enforcement department in the country.

But, in the immortal words of Alexandra Petri, the satirical columnist in the Washington Post:

  • "I think if you are going to draw a line someplace, killer robots should be on the other side of the line."

Click here to read Petri's entire hilarious column on this subject.

After the protest, I went home and did my bit for the cause, easy to do since I live in a storefront apartment. I made a display in my window of the quite wonderful poster, a print-out of Petri's column, and the contact info for my own supervisor:

Now I wait with baited breath to hear about the vote of the Supervisors this afternoon on killer robots.. AND the vote in Georgia to see how many people there have retained their sanity.

ALL FOR NOW, BLOGGELLINIS! Terry
